Is Ultrasuede Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Alcantara (related product), Microsuede, Synthetic suede, Faux suede

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Synthetic — a microfibre non-woven fabric made from polyester and polyurethane, developed by Dr Miyoshi Okamoto at Toray Industries (Japan) in 1970.

Common Uses

Luxury upholstery, garments, bags, book covers, watch straps, automotive interiors.

Durability

Excellent. Machine washable, resistant to stains, does not fray, and does not require dry cleaning unlike real suede. Very long-lasting.

Environmental Impact

High Environmental Impact

Petroleum-derived. Microplastic shedding occurs during washing, though the non-woven structure sheds somewhat less than knitted synthetics. Not biodegradable.

Editorial Notes

The original luxury synthetic suede. Used by major fashion houses as a vegan suede alternative. Ultrasuede is the brand name — generic equivalents include Alcantara (used in Ferrari and Porsche interiors), Dinamica, and various Chinese microsuede products. The vegan case is clear; the environmental case requires choosing recycled-content versions where available.
