Is Apple Leather Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Apple skin leather, LEAP leather

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-based — made from apple pomace (cores and peels), the solid waste from apple juice and cider production in South Tyrol, Italy.

Common Uses

Bags, wallets, watch straps, phone cases, accessories.

Durability

Moderate — similar to entry-to-mid-grade PU leather.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Uses 50% apple waste mixed with 50% polyurethane binder. Not fully biodegradable due to the PU component, but significantly reduces agricultural waste. Production concentrated in one of Europe's largest apple-growing regions.

Editorial Notes

Popularized by the brand FRUMAT (Italy). Used by multiple sustainable fashion brands across Europe. The apple-scent is processed out in production — finished material has no smell. A more sustainable option than virgin PU leather.
