Is Cork Leather Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Cork fabric, Amorim cork, Natural cork textile

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber), primarily in Portugal and Spain. The bark is stripped without felling the tree and regrows over approximately 9 years.

Common Uses

Bags, wallets, shoes, watch straps, yoga mats, phone cases, home accessories.

Durability

Good. Naturally water-resistant, lightweight, and scratch-resistant. Does not absorb water or odours.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Cork harvesting is one of the most sustainable raw material industries. The trees are not felled, bark regrowth sequesters carbon, and cork oak forests are protected biodiversity habitats. Portugal's montado ecosystem hosts endangered species including the Iberian lynx.

Editorial Notes

Portugal accounts for approximately 50–54% of global cork production (APCOR — Portuguese Cork Association). Cork leather typically has a paper or fabric backing for structural stability. It has a distinctive natural texture that is immediately recognisable. An excellent vegan leather alternative with strong ecological credentials.
