Is Cactus Leather (Desserto) Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Desserto, Nopal cactus leather, Cactus bio-material

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — made from the mature leaves of the nopal cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica), harvested without harming the plant. Developed by Mexican entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez.

Common Uses

Luxury fashion accessories, upholstery, shoes, bags, automotive interiors.

Durability

Good. Comparable to mid-grade PU leather. Breathable, partially biodegradable.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Nopal cactus requires no irrigation (uses only rainwater in most growing conditions), no fertilisers, and absorbs large quantities of CO₂. Harvesting is done by cutting mature leaves — the plant continues to grow. The Desserto production facility in Zacatecas, Mexico is solar-powered.

Editorial Notes

Launched in 2019. Used by Karl Lagerfeld, BMW, Fossil, and H&M in commercial collaborations. One of the most sustainability-credentialed next-gen materials available. The material is partially biodegradable — the cactus fibre component degrades while the backing does not (the current formulation includes a cotton or polyester backing).
