Is Conventional Cotton Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Regular cotton, Standard cotton, Non-organic cotton

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — from the Gossypium plant. Conventional cotton is the most widely grown non-food agricultural crop globally.

Common Uses

Clothing of all types, home textiles, industrial uses.

Durability

Good. Durable, breathable, and washable. Softens over time.

Environmental Impact

High Environmental Impact

Conventional cotton uses approximately 10,000–20,000 litres of water per kilogram of fibre (Water Footprint Network; WWF). It accounts for around 16% of global insecticide use despite covering only 2.5% of agricultural land. The Aral Sea disaster was largely caused by Soviet-era cotton irrigation. Despite high environmental cost, it involves no animal exploitation.

Editorial Notes

Despite being vegan, conventional cotton has severe environmental consequences. The 'choose organic' recommendation is primarily environmental rather than animal welfare. Recycled cotton (made from pre- or post-consumer cotton waste) is a more sustainable vegan option. BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) is a non-organic sustainable cotton standard with some environmental benefits.
