How bamboo viscose is made
Bamboo viscose starts with harvested bamboo stalks, which are crushed and treated to extract cellulose. The cellulose is then steeped in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) and reacted with carbon disulfide, producing a viscous solution. That step gives viscose its name. Spinnerets extrude the solution into an acid bath, where it regenerates as solid cellulose filaments that are spun into yarn.
That sequence is the standard viscose (rayon) process. The chemistry is identical whether the source cellulose comes from bamboo, beech, eucalyptus, or pine. The plant of origin has little effect on the finished fiber's properties or on the pollution profile of the process. Carbon disulfide is a recognized occupational hazard, and untreated effluent from viscose plants has been linked to water pollution in producing regions.
A mechanically processed alternative does exist. In bamboo linen, the stalks are crushed and retted much like flax. The method is rare, labor-intensive, and expensive. Where bamboo viscose commonly appears
Bamboo viscose is concentrated in product categories that trade on softness: underwear, socks, T-shirts, loungewear, and activewear. The fiber is especially prominent in babywear and children's sleepwear, where its smooth hand feel and breathability are selling points. It also turns up in bed sheets, pillowcases, and towels marketed as cooling or hypoallergenic.
