Is Ramie Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: China grass, Boehmeria nivea, Rhea, Grass linen

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — from the bast fibres of the ramie plant (Boehmeria nivea), primarily grown in China, Brazil, and the Philippines.

Common Uses

Blended with cotton or linen in shirts, trousers, and home textiles. Also used in industrial applications.

Durability

Very good. One of the strongest natural fibres, stronger than cotton and flax. Resistant to bacteria, mildew, and insects. Becomes stiffer with use unlike linen which softens.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Ramie requires no pesticides, minimal water, and grows rapidly. One of the oldest textile fibres — used in ancient Egypt. The extraction process (degumming) requires chemicals but these can be recovered. Biodegradable.

Editorial Notes

Ramie is less well-known than linen but shares similar properties. It is particularly strong and naturally resistant to biological degradation. Often blended with cotton to improve handling characteristics (pure ramie can be stiff and prone to wrinkling). Emerging interest from sustainable fashion designers.
