Environmental Impact
High Environmental ImpactPVC production involves chlorine chemistry, producing dioxins as byproducts — highly toxic persistent organic pollutants. Plasticisers (often phthalates) are added to make PVC flexible and may leach over time. Not biodegradable. PVC is generally considered the most environmentally harmful common plastic.
Editorial Notes
PVC leather is technically vegan but is considered the least desirable vegan leather option due to its environmental profile. Most sustainable fashion advocates recommend PU leather as a minimum and next-gen materials (Piñatex, Mylo, cork) where possible. The term 'vegan leather' is sometimes applied to PVC incorrectly — PVC and PU are different products with different environmental profiles.
