How Piñatex is made

Production begins in pineapple-growing regions, primarily the Philippines. Leaves left over after the fruit harvest are collected instead of being burned or discarded. Long fibers are extracted from the leaves through a process called decortication, which can be done by machine or by hand. The extracted fibers are then washed and dried.

The cleaned fibers are blended with a corn-based polylactic acid (PLA) and mechanically processed into a non-woven mesh. That base material is known as Piñafelt. The felt is shipped to finishing facilities in Europe, where it is coated with pigments and a protective resin layer to create the final leather-like material.

Because the raw material is an agricultural byproduct, no crops are grown specifically to produce the fiber. The leftover leaf biomass from fiber extraction is returned to farms, where it can be used as a natural fertilizer.

How Piñatex compares to leather and other alternatives

Piñatex performs comparably to mid-grade leather in everyday use. The material is lighter than animal leather, flexible, and water-resistant.
