Environmental Impact
High Environmental ImpactThe production of nylon 6,6 releases nitrous oxide (N₂O), a greenhouse gas approximately 300 times more potent than CO₂. Also sheds microplastics. Not biodegradable. However, nylon is highly durable and long-lasting, which reduces per-use impact.
Editorial Notes
Nylon was invented by DuPont in 1938 and was the first commercial synthetic fabric. It replaced silk in stockings during World War II. Econyl is a recycled nylon brand produced from discarded fishing nets, carpet waste, and fabric scraps — a significantly more sustainable option. Vegan but with high environmental footprint.
