Is Nylon / Polyamide Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Polyamide 6, Polyamide 6,6, PA6, PA66, Lycra Nylon

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Synthetic — produced from petrochemical feedstocks (adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine for PA66; caprolactam for PA6).

Common Uses

Tights/hosiery, swimwear, activewear, outdoor gear, bags, ropes, parachutes, toothbrush bristles.

Durability

Excellent. Exceptionally strong, abrasion-resistant, and elastic. One of the most durable synthetic fibres.

Environmental Impact

High Environmental Impact

The production of nylon 6,6 releases nitrous oxide (N₂O), a greenhouse gas approximately 300 times more potent than CO₂. Also sheds microplastics. Not biodegradable. However, nylon is highly durable and long-lasting, which reduces per-use impact.

Editorial Notes

Nylon was invented by DuPont in 1938 and was the first commercial synthetic fabric. It replaced silk in stockings during World War II. Econyl is a recycled nylon brand produced from discarded fishing nets, carpet waste, and fabric scraps — a significantly more sustainable option. Vegan but with high environmental footprint.
