Is Microfiber (Synthetic) Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Microfibre, Ultra-microfibre, Microsuede, Alcantara

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Synthetic — produced from extremely fine polyester or nylon fibres (less than 1 denier — finer than silk). Can also refer to microfibre cleaning cloths made from polyester-polyamide blends.

Common Uses

Upholstery (microsuede), cleaning cloths, sportswear, towels, soft toys. Alcantara is a luxury microfibre used in car interiors and watch straps.

Durability

High. Exceptionally soft, lightweight, and strong. Very absorbent in cleaning cloth form.

Environmental Impact

High Environmental Impact

Synthetic microfibre is among the worst microplastic polluters. The fineness of the fibres means they pass through wastewater treatment systems and accumulate in the ocean. Studies have found synthetic microfibre in Arctic sea ice, deep ocean sediments, and human blood.

Editorial Notes

Alcantara (produced by Alcantara SpA, Italy) is a widely used luxury microfibre in high-end automotive and fashion applications. It is vegan, unlike suede. However, its synthetic microplastic footprint is significant. Washing in a Guppyfriend bag is strongly recommended.
