Origin
Plant-derived — extracted from the stems of the sacred lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera). The lotus stems contain silky fibres that can be hand-reeled into a continuous thread. Produced almost exclusively in Myanmar and Cambodia.
Common Uses
Luxury scarves, shawls, robes. Primarily used by high-end and artisan fashion brands.
Durability
Moderate. Lighter than silk with similar drape. Rare and expensive due to highly labour-intensive hand extraction.
Environmental Impact
Low Environmental ImpactProduced without chemicals. Lotus plants purify water (phytoremediation), require no pesticides, and the stems used are harvested seasonally without harming the plant. Fully biodegradable.
Editorial Notes
Extracting lotus fibre requires tremendous labour — approximately 4,000 lotus stems are needed per metre of fabric, and the fibre must be worked within 24 hours of harvesting before it degrades. A metre of lotus fabric can cost several hundred euros. Used by luxury brands as an ultra-premium vegan silk alternative.
