Is Linen / Flax Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Flax linen, Flaxen, Pure linen, Linen fabric

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — from the bast fibres of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). One of the oldest cultivated textiles, with evidence of use 30,000 years ago.

Common Uses

Shirts, trousers, dresses, bed linen, table linen, suits, summer clothing.

Durability

Very good. Linen becomes stronger and softer with each wash. Can last decades. Highly breathable in hot weather.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Flax requires no irrigation in most European growing conditions, uses minimal pesticides, and the entire plant can be used (fibre for textiles, seed for linseed oil, residue for paper). Biodegradable at end of life.

Editorial Notes

Europe is the world's primary linen producer — France, Belgium, and the Netherlands (for retting) produce the highest-quality linen. Linen is more expensive than cotton due to its more labour-intensive production. It wrinkles easily, which is now considered a design feature by many brands. One of the most sustainable mainstream textile options available.
