Is Hemp Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Hemp fabric, Hemp canvas, Industrial hemp

Vegan

No animal products or byproducts are involved in the production of this material.

Origin

Plant-derived — from the bast fibers of the Cannabis sativa plant. No intoxicating compounds in industrial hemp fiber.

Common Uses

Canvas bags, shoes, jeans, shirts, rope, paper.

Durability

Excellent. One of the strongest natural fibers. Gets softer with washing. Lasts decades.

Environmental Impact

Low Environmental Impact

Requires no pesticides, minimal water, and improves soil health (phytoremediation). Sequesters carbon. One of the most sustainable textile crops available.

Editorial Notes

Legal restrictions historically limited hemp production in the US and EU, but these are being lifted. Hemp-based textiles can be scratchy when coarser — blends with TENCEL or cotton improve softness. Prices are still higher than conventional alternatives but falling as supply increases.
