How Silica Gel Is Made

Silica gel is manufactured almost entirely through inorganic chemistry. The standard industrial route starts with sodium silicate, also called water glass. That compound is produced by fusing quartz sand with sodium carbonate at high temperature. Treating a sodium silicate solution with an acid, typically sulfuric acid, causes hydrated silicon dioxide to precipitate as a gel. Washing removes residual salts. Drying then sets the desired porosity. Varying the washing and drying conditions yields the different commercial grades. Hard desiccant beads go into moisture packets, fine anti-caking powders into the food industry, and colloidal suspensions to wineries and breweries under names such as kieselsol.

Silica can also be obtained from natural deposits, chiefly diatomaceous earth, the fossilized remains of microscopic algae called diatoms. Diatoms are algae, not animals. That makes the natural source animal-free too. At no point in either production route are animal-derived raw materials or processing aids involved.

Where It Is Used at the Production Stage

In winemaking, colloidal silica works as a fining agent. Charged silica particles attract haze-forming proteins and other unstable compounds, form larger aggregates, and settle to the bottom of the tank. The sediment carries them out. Winemakers may apply it alongside or after bentonite clay during clarification. In brewing, silica gels and xerogels serve a similar purpose. They adsorb the haze-active proteins responsible for chill haze before the beer is filtered, which improves clarity and shelf stability.

Outside of beverages, silicon dioxide is one of the most widely used anti-caking agents in the food industry. It keeps powdered products free-flowing by absorbing moisture. The additive appears in table salt, spice blends, powdered soups and drink mixes, protein powders, and coffee creamers. It also serves as a standard flow agent in the manufacture of tablets and capsules, including many vitamin and supplement products. Hydrated silica is a common mild abrasive in toothpaste.

Why It Often Does Not Appear on Labels

Whether silicon dioxide shows up on a label depends entirely on how it is used. Fining wine or beer makes it a processing aid. It leaves the finished product together with the material it binds, and processing aids are generally exempt from ingredient declaration in both the EU and the US. Wine and beer labels in most jurisdictions carry few or no ingredient listings anyway. Silica fining is effectively invisible to the consumer.

When silicon dioxide is used as an additive that remains in the food, declaration is required. In the EU it appears in ingredient lists as 'silicon dioxide' or 'E551'. In the US it is listed by name, usually as 'silicon dioxide' or 'silica'. The substance is vegan in every form. That makes the labeling gap matter less here than it does for animal-derived fining agents. The practical concern for vegans is not the silica itself but what it may have been paired with during fining.

The Pairing Caveat: What Silica Is Combined With

Silica fining is vegan on its own, but in practice it is often one half of a two-part system. Winemakers and homebrew suppliers commonly pair kieselsol, a negatively charged colloidal silica, with a positively charged counter-agent. The traditional counterpart is gelatin, which is animal-derived. Chitosan, another frequent partner, is usually produced from crustacean shells, although fungal-derived chitosan also exists. A wine or beer described as silica-fined may therefore still have been in contact with animal products at some stage.

Fully vegan fining setups do exist and are increasingly common. Bentonite clay, activated carbon, plant-derived proteins from peas or potatoes, and fungal chitosan can all replace animal-based agents. Many producers now skip fining altogether in favor of filtration or extended settling. None of this is visible on the label.
