Where Bentonite Comes From

Bentonite is a clay formed over geological time from the weathering of volcanic ash. Its dominant mineral is montmorillonite, an aluminum phyllosilicate, and the material takes its name from the Benton Shale formation in Wyoming, where it was first described in the late nineteenth century. Major deposits are mined in the United States, China, Greece, Turkey, and India, typically by open-pit extraction followed by drying, crushing, and milling into a fine powder.

Two main commercial grades exist. Sodium bentonite swells strongly when wetted and is favored for industrial uses such as drilling fluids and sealants. Calcium bentonite swells less and is common in absorbent and cosmetic applications; it can also be converted to a sodium form through treatment with soda ash. Food- and beverage-grade bentonite is simply a purified version of the same mined mineral.

At no point does production involve animal inputs. Bentonite is extracted, processed, and packaged as an inorganic mineral, which places it firmly in the vegan category regardless of grade or supplier.

Its Role in Wine and Beer Production

Bentonite's principal food-industry use is as a fining agent, above all in winemaking. Grape-derived proteins can remain suspended in finished wine and later clump into a visible haze, particularly when white or rosé wines warm up in storage. Winemakers add a slurry of hydrated bentonite to the tank. The clay particles carry a negative charge. They bind electrostatically to the positively charged proteins, and the complexes settle to the bottom. The clarified wine is racked off and usually filtered before bottling.

Why It Never Appears on Labels
