Is Angora Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Also known as: Angora wool, Angora rabbit fiber

Not Vegan

This material is derived directly from animals or their byproducts.

Origin

Animal — fiber harvested from Angora rabbits by shearing, plucking, or combing. Major production in China (90% of global supply).

Common Uses

Sweaters, scarves, gloves, hats, soft accessories.

Durability

Soft and warm but low durability — prone to matting, shedding, and pilling.

Environmental Impact

Medium Environmental Impact

Angora farming is resource-intensive per unit of fiber. Animal welfare concerns are severe in large-scale Chinese production, documented by PETA undercover investigations showing rabbits screaming during plucking.

Editorial Notes

Following 2013 PETA investigations, major retailers including H&M, ASOS, Primark, Marks & Spencer, and many others banned angora. Despite this, it remains present in luxury and fast-fashion markets. Check PETA's 'Do Good' tool for current brand policies.
