Why the answer varies

The animal materials that recur are few enough to memorise. Carmine colors anything red, pink, or plum. Beeswax structures balms, mascaras, and cream products. Lanolin conditions. Guanine gives pearlescence to shimmer products and comes from fish scales. Squalane was historically extracted from shark liver, though the olive and sugarcane versions now dominate. Collagen, keratin, silk protein, and milk protein appear in products marketed on those specific claims.
